On trial is a poor Navajo charged with the murder of a sheriff. The star witness is Jim Chee, best friend of the murdered man. Lt Leaphorn observes the trial at the request of the defendant's family, who are old friends. Their separate trails lead both detectives to the heart of a complex plot.
