Various concepts play a role in Freud's theory of personality development. In addition to the general influence of early childhood on adulthood, these include the Oedipus complex, castration anxiety, the penis-baby correspondence, primary narcissism, drive theory, and oral and anal personality structures. The third volume in the series "Psychoanalysis and Empiricism" deals with empirical research into these psychoanalytic concepts. The investigations show that psychoanalysis can be used to derive diverse, meaningful, concrete and empirically verifiable hypotheses on the psychology of human development.
