December 2025 marks the 40th anniversary of the death of Molly Blackburn. To this day, questions remain around the circumstances of the tragic car accident that took the lives of Molly and fellow activist Brian Bishop, and whether an ever more desperate apartheid government had orchestrated an assassination as a response to the threat of the liberation movement in the Eastern Cape. Molly’s funeral in Port Elizabeth was attended by over 15 000 mourners, many of whom poured into the city from impoverished townships.
