This is a book about baseball embedded in a book about civilian adulthood in American civil society. It is written for a reader who is a knowledgeable baseball spectator and an educator intrigued by an opportunity to advance literacy about American civil society. This book is an invitation to imagine a teaching endeavor that does not yet exist.The centerpiece of this book is a contest between partisan and post-partisan ways to converse about professional minor league baseball in North America. Post-partisan conversations unfold on centered fields, common ground where persons with very different interests reside in one another's continuing company. Ballplayers and umpires join on centered baseball fields. Across American civil society, neighbors, travelers, concertgoers, volunteers, siblings, and worshippers join in civilian spaces that are centered fields. On centered fields, partisanship is enveloped in a larger togetherness. The author maps possibilities for post-partisan conversation by devising a new baseball scorekeeping.
