This booklet looks at types, themes and outcomes of over 700 traditional stories told largely by Romanies and heard in most European countries, West and East; North Africa; the Middle East; the Americas and Canada, plus a small number of linked Scottish Traveller tales. It seeks patterns in the constituents of these tales and the consequent reason for telling the stories. Inevitably, a high proportion reflect the every-day life of the narrators, the story heroes having dangers, disadvantages and challenges and their way of dealing with them. They teach the moral outlooks of the community, such as dealing with lack of needed items, use of skills and cleverness, honour, foolishness, love and many more.. The tales explain outcomes and how challenges can be overcome to achieve them, whether someone be at the mercy of tyrannical dragons, kings and nobles, step mothers, animals and the supernatural. The outcomes often involve justice, happiness, wealth, marriage and destiny – but also the opposites. The way the same Romani tales occur with little difference from one country to another is observed. As a result of the Indian origins of Romani peoples, there are inevitably parallels with Indian tales, especially those in the Mahabharata. To what extent the tales were actually brought to Europe from India is not provable in this booklet.
