A novel about an 18th-century sex therapist, which concerns the nature of the beauty myth and male/female perspectives of history. It opens with the ageing Lord Vermilion telling us that he is about to introduce us to the diaries of the now-dead Emilia and that they are "indecent" for the fair sex.
